L. Adams Beck (1862–1931), born Elizabeth Louisa Moresby, came late to writing after years travelling in India, China, Tibet and Japan, and became a prolific author of mystical and Theosophical fiction under three pen names (also ‘E. Barrington’ for historical romance and ‘Louis Moresby’ for non-fiction). Her occult-detective stories in The Openers of the Gate follow in the tradition of Blackwood’s John Silence. Often called the first prolific woman fantasy novelist in Canada.
