Johnny Gruelle (1880–1938) was a cartoonist and illustrator who created Raggedy Ann (and later Raggedy Andy), the rag dolls whose gentle fantasy adventures, told in richly illustrated books, became a permanent part of American childhood. A characteristic figure of the golden age of illustrated children’s storytelling.
