Horace Walpole (1717–1797), connoisseur, letter-writer and builder of the mock-Gothic Strawberry Hill, wrote The Castle of Otranto (1764), the first Gothic novel. Its haunted castle, supernatural portents and doomed nobility created a template for centuries of Gothic, horror and fantastic fiction. A single book that opened an entire tradition.
