Henry Beston (1888–1968) is celebrated for The Outermost House, his account of a solitary year on the Great Beach of Cape Cod and a founding text of the modern environmental movement. Earlier he wrote well-regarded literary fairy tales (The Firelight Fairy Book), and his lyrical feeling for the natural world gives all his writing a quietly numinous quality.
