Eugene Field (1850–1895) was a Chicago newspaper columnist beloved as the ‘poet of childhood’ for verse like ‘Wynken, Blynken, and Nod’ (a dream-voyage in a wooden shoe) and ‘The Duel’ (the gingham dog and the calico cat). His whimsical, dream-tinged children’s poetry is a warm corner of American imaginative writing.
