Edith Allonby (1875–1905) was a Lancashire schoolmistress who wrote three intense allegorical novels, Jewel Sowers and Marigold, both set on the invented planet ‘Lucifram’, and The Fulfilment. Struggling for recognition, she took her own life at 29 in the desperate hope of drawing attention to her final book. Her strange, earnest planetary allegories are a poignant footnote in early science fiction by women.
