Denis Diderot (1713–1784), co-editor of the great Encyclopédie, was a founding mind of the Enlightenment whose fiction ranged into the speculative and philosophical, the materialist dream-vision D’Alembert’s Dream imagines evolution and the nature of matter, and his tales test ideas through invention. A key rationalist ancestor of the literature of ideas.
