Annie Fellows Johnston (1863–1931) was a hugely popular author of children’s fiction, best known for the thirteen-book ‘Little Colonel’ series (1895 onward), whose spirited Kentucky heroine became the basis for the 1935 Shirley Temple film. Her warm, sentimental tales of Southern childhood were a fixture of turn-of-the-century American children’s reading.
