J. M. Barrie (1860–1937) created Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up, and the dream-country of Neverland, first on the stage and then in Peter and Wendy, giving children’s fantasy one of its permanent myths. A successful playwright and novelist besides, Barrie’s blend of whimsy, longing and darkness has kept Peter Pan alive across a century of adaptation.
