Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) was a leading feminist theorist whose fiction remains widely read. ‘The Yellow Wall-Paper’ is a landmark of psychological horror and social protest, and Herland (1915) imagines an isolated all-female society of peace and reason, one of the most important feminist utopias in the genre’s history. Her work put gender and social structure at the centre of speculative writing.
