J.-H. Rosny aîné (1856–1940), pen name of Joseph Boex, is, after Jules Verne, the most important pioneer of French science fiction. His prehistoric epic La Guerre du Feu (Quest for Fire) became a world classic and a celebrated film, while ‘Les Xipéhuz’ and ‘The Death of the Earth’ imagine genuinely alien life and far-future extinction with a scope like Wells or Stapledon. A founding juror of the Prix Goncourt and a Légion d’honneur laureate.
