Palmer Cox (1840–1924) created ‘The Brownies’, mischievous little sprites whose illustrated adventures in verse were a publishing phenomenon of the 1880s–90s, spawning books, toys and even the name of the Kodak ‘Brownie’ camera. His whimsical fantasy world was among the most beloved children’s creations of its era.
