Ludwig Tieck (1773–1853) was a central figure of German Romanticism whose literary fairy tales and uncanny stories, ‘The Blond Eckbert’, ‘The Runenberg’, brought a new psychological depth and ambiguity to the fantastic. His fusion of folklore, dread and dreamlike strangeness influenced the whole European tradition of the Kunstmärchen and the weird tale.
