The Lani People by Jesse F. Bone
A boxed ad in the medical journal offers a new veterinarian an unheard-of salary for tending livestock on a distant world, and Jac Kennon, suspicious of any catch, takes the bait.
Jesse F. Bone's 1962 novel is a thoughtful social-SF space opera about slavery and personhood. Sharp, humane golden-age SF. Read it for a story where a young vet discovers the beautiful, tailed 'livestock' he has been hired to tend are the Lani, intelligent beings held as property, and must reckon with what he has become part of.
