Off Course by Mack Reynolds
Two highway patrolmen skid across a field toward what they take for a crashed Air Force plane, and instead find a wheelless, cockpitless egg, from which a yawning alien steps and says, 'Glork.'
Mack Reynolds's 1954 story is a genial first-contact comedy of an alien visitor loose on Earth. Fun, wry golden-age SF. Read it for a delightful tale where a stranded, telepathic extraterrestrial named Dameri Tass causes escalating confusion after landing off course.
