William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863), author of Vanity Fair, brought his satirical eye to fantasy in The Rose and the Ring (1855), a witty ‘fireside pantomime’ of enchanted gifts and comic royalty that remains a classic of Victorian literary fairy tale. His burlesques and Christmas books show a playful imaginative side alongside the great social novels.
