Heinrich Hoffmann (1809–1894) was a Frankfurt psychiatrist who wrote and illustrated Struwwelpeter (1845), the famous, and famously gruesome, book of cautionary nursery tales whose exaggerated punishments have delighted and terrified children ever since. A landmark of the darker, fantastical strain of children’s literature.
