When the Sleeper Wakes by H. G. Wells
A restless Victorian falls into a trance-sleep and wakes two centuries later to find that his small fortune, compounded across the years, has made him the sleeping master of the whole world.
H. G. Wells's 1899 novel is a landmark dystopian vision of the future. Prophetic, sweeping, superbly imagined. Read it for a foundational SF classic, a man waking into a towering, mechanized 22nd-century London ruled in his name, and the revolution his awakening ignites, in one of Wells's grand social prophecies (later revised as The Sleeper Awakes).
